The European Commission has now published its proposal for the EU’s ratification of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
In Paris in December 2015, the EU committed along with nearly 200 other parties to keeping temperature rise to well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to keep it to 1.5°C.
Clear and transparent planning and monitoring will be key to this process in the EU.
The Paris Agreement will come into force after it has been ratified by 55 countries, accounting for at least 55% of global emissions.
The Commission's proposal is now with the European Parliament and Council for their approval.
In parallel, the EU Member States will ratify the Paris Agreement individually, in accordance with their national parliamentary processes.
